an introduction - part 2

April 20, 2018

In my last post I talked about why I make art and my artistic journey.

Now, let’s talk about my current challenge of becoming a professional artist.

So, why do I want to start an art business?

Well I’ll let you know right off the bat that part of the reason is money.

I have a job right now, but as many millennials will tell you, it’s hard to make ends meet with an entry-level position.

I’m doing okay right now, but I want to do better than okay. I want to have an emergency fund, and a car, and I want to stop living paycheck to paycheck. But that’s only going to stop if I use my talents the right way.

Of course I could make more money in some other way. I’ve looked into so many “side-hustles” in the past two years and none seemed as simple and fulfilling as doing something I love.

Making money from something I already do seems like a no-brainer.

It’s not just the money, though.

I know there are people out there that will relate to my art. They have similar feelings and experiences to me, the same things that I put in my art.

As I started committing to making my business, I started thinking about who my art is pointed towards. I started thinking about the people who feel...weird.

Weird in their body, weird in their mind. The people who feel disconnected from their bodies because of disability, mental illness, being trans, or even being fat.

I want to relate to people for whom being in their own body is a struggle. And I want to honor that struggle.

But I also want to affirm their bodies. Our bodies are weird, and weird is beautiful.

Whether that’s with a surreal picture of a deer with human hands, or close-ups of stretch marks and body hair.

I hope that by making my art available to buy and spreading the word, I’ll connect with people like me.

As of writing this post, I have made no money from my art. (Okay, I’m not counting the time I got $15 as a prize from the county fair) I’m starting from the ground and building up.

And I’m going to go somewhere.
